An agency that I contacted and talked to was the Chatham County Police Department. I was allowed to come out and talk to the officers and look at the boats they use. They have two Seadoos which are used to patrol the local rivers along with a 14’ low V river boat. The river boat is used as a support boat to the officers on the PWCs. When the officers stop a boat and find an offense like BUI, too few life jackets, or non registered boat, they call the support unit to bring the larger river boat to write the ticket. The officers told me that it is hard to hold onto another boat, get their ticket book out of one of the saddle bags, and write the ticket. They would rather the larger more stable boat be the one to sit there and give the ticket. During the conversation I asked the officers if they could design their own boat, what type and where would they put storage compartments. Their main concerns were their ticket books and radios. They wanted them close within reach, near the handle bars or on the side of the instrument panel. Another point that was made it that only one officer rode the PWC while they were patrolling, but they rode in pairs.

This is their 19’ open water boat. Notice the light bar and deck markings. The radio and controls can also be seen. CCP’s PWCs on the trailer at the Police station. This view shows the blue warning lights under the mirrors and the POLICE on the front.
This picture shows the rear of the boats, including the rear lights and the saddle bags. The side identification sticker is shown in this view. This is the rescue disk kept with the fire extinguisher in the front compartment. A velcro strap goes around the throws wrist and rope unreels as it travels.
This is a close up of how the saddle bags attach to the ski. The interior of the saddle bags is a styrofoam like the inside of a cooler made for drinks. This is one of the officers demonstrating the difficulty of getting things out of the rear saddle bags.

Another vehicle I looked at was a Savannah Police Harley Davidson motorcycle. Some of the items I was looking at were the windshield,

the seat, and the side storage units.
